Francesco Paolucci – ENAC Flight Test Engineer
Antonio Baldussi – ITAF Flight Test Pilot

Abstract

The AW139 is a large twin engine helicopter approved for single pilot IFR and Category A operations. In its basic configuration it is equipped with a four axis dual channel digital Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS), providing basic autopilot functions, navigation and hovering modes.

As a subsequent step, the SAR modes were developed and proposed to EASA certification. This paper provides some highlights on the experience gained during the EASA approval of the SAR modes.

In particular this paper focuses on the approach followed by the Certification Authority Flight Test Team to guarantee that a fully comprehensive and safe testing campaign of the SAR Modes were implemented to show compliance with the certification requirements.
